Are you looking to hire someone to build an app? Here’s what to check before choosing a UK mobile app developer — from costs, ownership and communication, to the clear red flags.

Hiring a Mobile App Developer – It’s a Game of Trust

Search for a mobile app developer in the UK and you’ll find freelancers, small development studios, large agencies, numerous offshore teams and companies promising to build practically anything. Prices can vary wildly too.

So how do you know who you’re actually hiring, what you should expect to pay and whether the sales pitch will translate into an app that you’re pleased with? Here’s what we’d look at before handing anyone the project.

How Much Does it Cost to Hire a Mobile App Developer in the UK?

There isn’t a universal price for hiring a mobile app developer because there isn’t a universal app, right? A relatively straightforward application with a few core user journeys is completely different from a platform involving subscriptions, payments, maps, messaging, multiple user roles and a substantial backend.

As a general rule, professional mobile app development is a several-thousand-pound investment, with complex applications potentially costing considerably more. Current UK agency pricing published online illustrates just how broad the market can be, with project costs changing substantially according to complexity, integrations, platforms and infrastructure.

At Develoroo, we don’t think a vague hourly rate is particularly useful when you’re trying to establish what an entire product will cost.

So what’s important? Look for a developer who scopes the project first. Speak with them. See if they want to understand your business, your brand, your goals and how this app is going to get you there. Only then can somebody give you a true price for what you need.

Freelancer vs Agency – Who to Choose?

There isn’t a universally correct answer – in fact, ask this question at the END of your decision making process. Because many of the pro vs cons would’ve already been answered. A good freelancer can be an excellent choice for the right project. A larger mobile app development agency can provide access to a broader team covering development. And then there’s the middle ground: smaller founder-led development businesses where you communicate directly with a founder who takes ownership of delivering your product.

The important thing isn’t whether the company has two people or 200. It’s whether the people selling you the project are capable of delivering what they’ve promised. Always try to establish the following:

Ask Who Will Actually Build Your App

This sounds obvious. It isn’t. You can have an excellent initial conversation with somebody from an agency and then barely speak to them again. Your project gets passed to a project manager. The project manager speaks to a developer. The developer asks a question. The question comes back through the project manager. You answer. And off it goes again. See what’s happening?

That structure isn’t awful – large development teams need management. But you should know who you’re actually working with before you sign anything.

At Develoroo, we’re deliberately founder-led from the off. Fewer layers. Less opportunity for things to get lost in translation. Learn more about how we’re founder led about develoroo.

Don’t Choose an App Developer Purely on Price

Let’s get this one out of the way. The cheapest quote isn’t automatically the best deal. Neither is the most expensive. If one developer quotes £5,000 and another quotes £25,000, that doesn’t necessarily mean one is cheap and the other is ripping you off. They might just not be quoting for the same thing.

One proposal might include product planning, custom UI/UX, backend development, deployment, testing and post-launch support. Another might essentially cover development from a specification you are expected to provide, or maybe even a template driven SaaS app that you don’t truly own.

Compare scope against scope, not just number against number. Ask exactly what you’re getting for the money.

Ask If You Actually Need Every Feature

One of the best signs when choosing a developer is somebody willing to challenge your spec. That’s so important when you’re building the first version of a product. If you’ve arrived with 20 features and only eight are necessary to prove whether customers actually want the app, building all 20 might be a bad use of your budget.

A good developer shouldn’t automatically say yes to everything because it increases the invoice. Sometimes the right answer is: Don’t build that yet. Build the core product properly. Launch it. See what users actually do. Then invest in the next version based on usage.

If you’re building a new product, our guide to validating an idea before building your app goes into this in more detail.

Ask How You’ll Communicate

So simple yet so important. Don’t just assume. Before hiring a mobile app developer, ask:

How often will i receive updates?

Where will we communicate?

Who do i contact when i have a question?

Will i be able to see progress during development?

You shouldn’t have to send three emails and bang your head against a wall to get a project update. Development projects involve decisions. Requirements evolve. Questions appear. Clear communication isn’t a nice little bonus. It’s part of delivering the product properly. At Develoroo, communication remains direct throughout the project, with regular updates and a clear channel for discussing the build.

No chasing.

No wondering what’s happening.

No disappearing developer act.

Make Sure You Know Who Owns The App

Ask this before development begins, not after you’ve paid for it. You need to understand who owns:

  • the source code
  • design assets
  • developer accounts
  • backend infrastructure
  • domains where applicable
  • intellectual property created specifically for the project

You don’t want to discover later that the thing you paid to develop is actually an asset owned by the developer. Ownership should be clear from the beginning.

What Happens After The App Launches?

Getting onto the App Store and Google Play isn’t the end of an application’s life. Operating systems change. Devices change. Dependencies get updated. Bugs appear. Users find wonderfully creative ways of doing things nobody anticipated. Your developer should be able to explain what happens after launch. Warranty periods, bug fixes, maintenance, platform updates and ongoing costs should all be part of your enquiry list.

Develoroo includes a 12-month guarantee on our development work, because handing over the product and disappearing isn’t much of a relationship. Check out our mobile app development services for more info.

Red Flags to Avoid When Hiring a Developer

We would approach any of the following with caution:

  • they provide an instant quote without understanding your requirements
  • the price seems impossibly cheap
  • they can’t show anything they’ve actually built
  • ownership of the finished product is vague
  • they won’t explain who’s doing the development
  • communication is already poor before you’ve begun
  • everything you suggest is greeted with “yes”
  • the proposal doesn’t clearly define what’s included
  • there’s no explanation of what happens after launch
  • they’re promising unrealistic timescales simply to win the project

None of those automatically means you’re dealing with a bad developer, but they’re a good reason to keep asking questions.

You’re not just buying a collection of screens when building a mobile app. You’re trusting someone to build a digital product that could become an important part of your business. So it’s a decision that deserves a bit of TLC!
